What is the EYP Level 2 apprenticeship?
It’s a paid, work-based training programme where you learn on the job and complete structured training towards the Level 2 Early Years Practitioner standard. Apprentices gain hands-on experience while studying, supported by a dedicated tutor. Best Practice Network
How long does it take?
The programme typically takes 12–14 months plus a final End-Point Assessment (EPA) window of up to 2 months. Best Practice Network+1
Who is it for?
Ideal if you want to start or develop a career as an Early Years Practitioner, Nursery Practitioner, or Classroom Assistant in an early years setting. Best Practice Network
What will I learn?
Three main themes: Health and wellbeing; Support care routines for babies and young children; Equality, diversity, inclusive practice & SEND. You’ll also learn to support planning and delivery of educational programmes for ages 0–5 and to safeguard and promote children’s welfare. Best Practice Network
How is the training delivered?
You’ll get a high level of support with monthly tutor visits and 1:1 taught lessons, backed by online training events. Work is uploaded via Bud, an easy-to-use online platform (employers can view progress). Starts are bi-monthly rather than tied to the academic year. Best Practice Network
What does “delivery includes” in practice?
Monthly online knowledge sessions, half-termly review meetings with your tutor, regular workplace observations, and employer/mentor witness statements. Best Practice Network
Will I earn a salary?
Yes. You are an employee and will earn at least the Apprentice Minimum Wage while you train. (Employers may pay more.) Best Practice Network
Do I need English and maths?
Ages 16–18: if you don’t already have GCSE English and maths grade 4/C+, you’ll complete Functional Skills Level 1 during the programme (with specialist support).
Over 18: If you have not already achieved GCSE English and maths grade 4/C+ whether you take Functional Skills is agreed with your setting; support is available if needed. Best Practice Network
What are the off-the-job (OTJ) training requirements?
Your employer must give you time during your working hours each week for activities and learning towards your apprenticeship. This is called Off-the-Job training. For 30 hours or more, this will be an average of 6 hours per week, that can be spread out in any way that suits yourself and your setting. Examples include training events, online learning, coaching/mentoring, shadowing, and reflective study. Best Practice Network+1
How is the apprenticeship assessed?
After you, your employer and tutor agree you’re ready (“Gateway”), an independent EPA organisation assesses you through a professional discussion using your portfolio and a multiple-choice test. Best Practice Network
How is it funded? What does it cost?
The training price is £5,000, but apprentices pay £0. The apprenticeship can be up to 100% funded via the Apprenticeship Levy. For non-levy employers, government co-funding usually means the employer pays 5% of the training cost (for Level 2, the maximum employer fee is £200 +VAT). Additional incentives may apply for small employers or younger apprentices. Best Practice Network+1
Does this qualification help my setting meet statutory staffing requirements?
Yes. A Level 2 EYP qualification contributes to the EYFS requirement that at least 50% of staff hold a Level 2 in group settings. Best Practice Network
Can I change employer during the programme?
Yes, but your new employer must agree to support the apprenticeship and complete the required checks and contracts with the provider before you transfer. Best Practice Network

What are the entry-eligibility basics?
You must be 16+ and meet residency/funding rules for apprenticeships in England (typically UK residency for 3+ years). Your employer needs to agree funding and support; the provider can advise and help with levy or co-funding setup. Best Practice Network
Where will I study?
Training is primarily in your workplace with tutor visits and online learning; there’s no need to attend college. Best Practice Network
What support will I get?
