Overview & Eligibility
What is the Leader Apprenticeship with NPQLTD?
It’s a dual-award programme that maps the DfE’s NPQ for Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD) to the Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship, so you earn both qualifications while embedding practice-based leadership skills directly in your school. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
Who is this programme for?
It’s designed for teachers who lead (or aspire to lead) the development of other teachers—whether across a whole school or specifically for trainees and early-career teachers. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
What are the entry requirements?
Applicants need full employer support, a Teacher Reference Number (TRN), at least two years’ teaching experience, and leadership aspiration/experience; a headteacher or equivalent must confirm support as part of the DfE’s mandatory requirements. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
Programme Structure & Delivery
How long does it take and how is it delivered?
The programme runs over 12 months using a blended model that includes three face-to-face events, online study via the BUD virtual learning environment, webinars, and monthly coaching to support application of learning. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
What are the headline benefits?
You combine NPQLTD’s evidence-informed approach to teacher development with the operational people-management focus of the Level 4 Associate Project Manager standard, gaining practical coaching, performance management and project-management skills to drive sustained improvements in classroom practice. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
Funding & Costs
How much does it cost and how is it funded?
Programme fees can be fully covered using your school’s Apprenticeship Levy via its Apprenticeship Service account; for non-levy payers, government co-investment typically funds 95%, making the programme effectively £0 to schools using levy funds. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
What is the Apprenticeship Levy?
Large employers with a wage bill over £3 million pay 0.5% into the levy to create sustainable apprenticeship funding, giving employers control over staff training opportunities; apprenticeship funding can support both new and existing staff. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
Awards & Progression
What qualification(s) will I achieve?
On completion you receive the NPQLTD plus the Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship, reflecting both specialist teacher-development expertise and core leadership capabilities. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
Can this count towards a Master’s degree?
Yes—Best Practice Network partners with universities so NPQs/Leader Apprenticeships can contribute Master’s credits; for example, NPQLTD can be worth 40 credits at Level 7 with the University of Chester or 30 credits at Level 7 with Liverpool Hope University (credit amounts vary by university). (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
Applications
What support is available during application?
If your school needs help setting up its Apprenticeship Service account, Best Practice Network will guide you through it as part of the funding process. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
Practicalities & Support
What platform supports online learning?
Participants access resources, communities and feedback through BUD, Best Practice Network’s virtual learning environment, which also supports submission and assessment workflows. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
How many in-person sessions are included?
There are three face-to-face events delivered via a nationwide partner network and facilitated by local school leaders. (bestpracticenet.co.uk)
Teacher Reference Number (TRN)
Why do I need a TRN and how do I get help with it?
A TRN is a unique 7-digit identifier required for NPQ surveys and to download your DfE certificate; if you’ve forgotten it or need to request one (including from outside England), the TRN Support Guide explains retrieval and request routes and who to contact for issues.
