What is NPQSL?
NPQSL is a DfE-accredited National Professional Qualification for school leaders who are, or aspire to be, senior leaders with cross-school responsibilities. It’s aligned to master’s credits and can springboard to Liverpool Hope University’s MA in Leading in Education or MBA in Educational Leadership. bestpracticenet.co.uk
Who is it for?
Eligible participants are current or aspiring senior leaders (often operating both strategically and operationally, typically working through middle leaders to improve outcomes across the school). bestpracticenet.co.uk
How long is it and what’s the time commitment?
The programme runs over 18 months, with approximately 90 total learning hours: 4 face-to-face events, 38 hours of online learning, and 6 hours of coaching. bestpracticenet.co.uk+1
How is NPQSL delivered?
It’s a blended model: face-to-face training days, online study via BPN’s Canvas VLE, webinars, and leadership coaching supported by a nationwide delivery partner network. bestpracticenet.co.uk
What will I study?
Content is structured into cycles with short and full courses, covering themes such as School Culture, Teaching, Curriculum & Assessment, Behaviour, SEND, Professional Development, Organisational Management, Implementation, Working in Partnership, and Governance & Accountability. bestpracticenet.co.uk+1
What’s the difference between Standalone NPQSL and the School Leader Programme with NPQSL?
School Leader Programme with NPQSL: NPQSL plus the Level 5 Operations Manager Apprenticeship, broader cross-sector leadership exposure, monthly coaching, and additional frameworks/resources. Funded via the Apprenticeship Levy. bestpracticenet.co.uk
Standalone NPQSL: The NPQSL on its own with 6 hours of coaching and an education-focused programme. Can be self-funded. bestpracticenet.co.uk
What are the entry requirements?
You’ll need support from your headteacher/line manager (DfE requirement), a Teacher Reference Number (TRN), 2 years’ teaching experience, and leadership aspiration/experience. bestpracticenet.co.uk
I don’t know my TRN—how do I find or request it?
BPN’s TRN Support Guide explains how to retrieve or request a TRN (including steps if you are outside England). bestpracticenet.co.uk
What support will I get during the programme?
You’re assigned a Leadership Performance Coach—an experienced teacher/leader—who provides advice and feedback on practice activities and formative tasks, and helps manage workload and progress. bestpracticenet.co.uk
What does the assessment involve?
A single summative assessment: a written response to a case-study scenario (max 1,500–2,500 words) submitted within an 8-day window. You must also engage with 90% of course elements set by the provider. bestpracticenet.co.uk
Where are face-to-face days held?
Events run through BPN’s national partner network, aiming to place you in a geographically convenient group (subject to viability). bestpracticenet.co.uk
When can I start?
The site indicates Autumn 2025 starts (with a November 2025 cohort to register interest for).
How do I apply?
Use the Register Interest link on the NPQSL page for the upcoming cohort; the PDF also advises applying early and discussing goals with your headteacher/CPD lead. bestpracticenet.co.uk+1
What are the benefits for participants and schools?
Participants benefit from expert facilitation, a mobile-friendly VLE, local delivery, tailored needs analysis, and assessment support. Schools gain leaders equipped to implement sustainable, evidence-based improvement and share a common professional language (the “golden thread”). bestpracticenet.co.uk
