Once you’ve completed your NPQ Summative Assessment Task (SAT), it can take several months before your final, government‑approved result and certificate are ready. This delay can feel frustrating, so this article explains what happens during the process and how to access your certificate once it’s available.
How long does it take after the SAT?
After you submit your SAT, your work goes through a national quality‑assurance process that all NPQ providers must follow:
- Marking by the provider
- Internal moderation
- External moderation
- Benchmarking against other NPQ providers
- Final government ratification
Because these stages involve multiple organisations, the process often takes months rather than weeks.
When will I hear from Best Practice Network?
As soon as we receive your final result, we will:
- Email you within 2 working days to share your result
-
Follow up 4–5 working days later with instructions on how to access your NPQ certificate
(this is the point at which we know the certificate is live on the DfE platform) - Let you know next steps if you need support
We never delay releasing results or certificate instructions — the wait is due entirely to the national moderation and approval process, and the time it takes for certificates to be published on the DfE site.
How do I access my NPQ certificate?
NPQ certificates are issued by the Department for Education (DfE) and not by training providers.
You can access your certificate through your DfE Identity account:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/access-your-teaching-qualifications
You will need your Teacher Reference Number (TRN) to log in.
Using your TRN
- Enter only the 7 numerical digits
- Do not include any letters (e.g., “RP”)
- Do not include slashes or other characters
If you don’t know your TRN, use the DfE’s Find a lost TRN service.
I completed my NPQ years ago — how do I get a copy?
You can still access your certificate via the same DfE portal:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/access-your-teaching-qualifications
Your certificate remains linked to your TRN, even if your NPQ was completed several years ago.
If you experience issues accessing your certificate or your Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) record, please contact the TRA directly. Providers do not have access to this system.
