Eligible schools can claim an initial teacher training (ITT) mentor grant if the mentor supports a student teacher enrolled in certain primary or secondary courses leading to qualified teacher status (QTS), has registered with Best Practice Network, and completed the mentor support package. The grant excludes mentoring during Early Career Framework (ECF) induction. Schools are contacted by the Department for Education in May to claim funding via the mentor grant portal. Eligible schools can claim an initial teacher training (ITT) mentor grant if the mentor has registered with Best Practice Network and completed the mentor support package. The grant does not apply when you are mentoring a teacher as part of their Early Career Framework (ECF) induction.
Who can claim the ITT mentor grant
An eligible school can claim the ITT mentor grant when the mentor supports a student teacher enrolled on one of the following:
- Primary 3 to 7 leading to qualified teacher status (QTS).
- Primary 5 to 11 leading to QTS.
- A secondary subject.
The mentor must also have registered their details with Best Practice Network as a mentor and completed the mentor support package.

How eligible schools claim the funding
The Department for Education (DfE) contacts all eligible schools, typically in May, with details of how to claim through the mentor grant claim portal.
When the mentor grant does not apply
The ITT mentor grant does not apply if you are mentoring a teacher as part of their ECF induction.
