How is NPQEL International delivered?
NPQEL International runs over an 18-month cycle. It blends six facilitated event days, described as face-to-face events but delivered remotely for international participants, with structured online study, practical activities in your school and leadership performance coaching.
This structure allows you to apply your learning immediately in your own context. The programme is designed for remote participation worldwide, using facilitated webinars and a virtual learning environment to provide the same content and support as on-site United Kingdom cohorts.
What is the time commitment?
Across NPQEL International, you complete:
- six event days
- around 38 hours of online study
- four formative assessment tasks linked to your practice
- six hours of one-to-one coaching
These components add up to approximately 116 guided learning hours over the 18-month programme.
What happens during the events and online courses?
The NPQEL International events introduce the context for each programme cycle. Topics include ethical leadership, implementing change, culture and ethos, leading teaching, organisational effectiveness, readiness and review.

Who can apply?
To apply for NPQEL International, you need support from your school or organisation. This includes a sponsor in a senior role who can confirm both their support and the accuracy of the information in your application.
You should be proficient in English and typically have at least three years of headship experience or equivalent executive-level responsibility across schools.
You also need a Teacher Reference Number (TRN). If you do not already have one, you will receive support to obtain one during registration.

Why do you need a Teacher Reference Number?
A Teacher Reference Number uniquely identifies you within England's education system. You need it to complete mandatory National Professional Qualification surveys and access your DfE certificate after successfully completing the programme.

The final summative assessment is a written response to a case study. Your response can be no more than 1,500 words and must be submitted within an eight-day window.
