Students who have registered with Best Practice Network, accepted an initial teacher training offer, signed a Learner Agreement, and only have GCSE English or science outstanding may be eligible for a free equivalency test. Places are limited, allocated first come, first served, and may be withdrawn under certain conditions. Only one exam attempt is allowed, and further guidance is available online.
You may be eligible for a free English or science equivalency test if you are a student teacher who meets all the criteria below. Places are limited, offered on a first come, first served basis and do not guarantee that you will receive a free test.
Who is eligible for a free equivalency test
To be eligible for a free English or science equivalency test, you must:
- Have registered your details in our system.
- Have signed and accepted an initial teacher training (ITT) offer with Best Practice Network.
- Have signed your Learner Agreement.
- Have GCSE English or science as the only outstanding condition of your offer.
Pre-programme checks and references do not count as outstanding conditions for this purpose.
How free test places are allocated
Free English and science equivalency test places are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis. If you receive a place, you will have only one opportunity to take the exam.
Depending on whether your intake is in January or September, Best Practice Network will contact you if your application for a limited place is successful. The message will include the date by which you must complete your exam.

When a free test place can be withdrawn
Best Practice Network may withdraw your free equivalency test place or cancel a booked exam if:
- You or Best Practice Network withdraw or decline your application after an offer has been made.
- Your application and offer are moved to a later intake.
- You refuse a school placement, if you are a fee-funded, tuition fee-based student.
