You need GCSE English and maths at grade C/4 or above, and GCSE science for Early Years, Primary, or SEND ITT. If missing, you must pass equivalency tests before starting. During ITT, you must maintain and develop English and maths skills, including completing a GCSE Maths Higher Course, regardless of prior qualifications.

When do you need to complete an equivalency test?
You can start your programme application before completing your required equivalency tests. However, you must pass all required tests before you can begin the programme.

Do you continue developing English and maths during ITT?
All student teachers must maintain their fundamental English and maths skills, regardless of their previous qualifications.
The Department for Education (DfE) ITT criteria and supporting advice require ITT providers to ensure that student teachers can demonstrate competence in the following fundamental skills before being recommended for teacher status:
- English, including speaking and listening, reading and writing
- Maths
You must address any gaps or shortfalls in these skills in addition to completing the other aspects of your training.
The ITT curriculum includes opportunities to practise and develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. You will evidence these skills through activities such as writing reflections, engaging with research and delivering presentations.
Do you complete a GCSE Maths Higher Course during ITT?
To practise your maths skills and ensure they remain at GCSE level, you must complete a GCSE Maths Higher Course during the programme. This applies regardless of your previous qualifications, and your personal tutor can guide you through the course.
