To participate in Canvas discussions, select Discussions from the top-left menu, choose a topic, and post your reply. You can read, like, or reply to others' contributions. Canvas subscribes you to discussions you reply to, sending notifications for new posts, which you can unsubscribe from. Video instructions are available via a provided link.
To take part in a Canvas discussion, select Discussions from the top-left menu, choose a discussion and post your reply. You can also read, like or reply to contributions from your colleagues.
How to open a discussion
Throughout your course, discussions allow tutors and students to contribute to discussion topics.
- Select Discussions from the top-left menu.
- Choose the discussion you want to contribute to. Discussions marked with a green notepad and pencil icon form part of an assignment.
- Use the numbers on the right of each discussion to see how many replies are read or unread.
- Select a discussion to view its task or discussion topic.
How to respond to a discussion
- Scroll down to read previous contributions from your colleagues.
- To respond to a colleague, reply to or like their comment.
- To add your own response, select Write a reply.
- Compose your response, then select Post reply at the bottom of your message.
How discussion notifications work
After you post a reply, Canvas automatically subscribes you to that discussion. You will then receive a notification whenever someone adds a new post.
To stop receiving notifications from the discussion, select the Subscribed button to unsubscribe.
