The Canvas inbox functions like Outlook email, allowing users to contact course colleagues and tutors. Users can read, filter by status or course, send new messages, and attach documents. Staff should message their section, not student groups, to avoid unnecessary recipients. A tutorial video is also available.
You can use the Canvas inbox like Outlook email to contact colleagues and tutors linked to your course. Open Inbox from the left-hand menu to read, filter and send messages or attach documents.
How to find and read Canvas messages
- Select Inbox from the left-hand menu in Canvas.
- Select a message from the list on the left. The message thread will appear on the right.
The Canvas inbox has a similar layout to a personal email account.
How to filter your Canvas messages
Use the two drop-down boxes at the top of the inbox to find specific messages. You can filter messages by options such as Read or Unread, or by the courses you are part of.
How to send a new Canvas message
- Select the pen icon at the top right of the inbox.
- Search for the participant or teacher you want to message.
- Add a subject and write your message.
- Select Send.
How to attach a document
When writing a Canvas message, select the paperclip icon and attach the document you need to send.
How staff should message students
If you are a staff member and want to email your students, message your section. This sends the message to all students in your section.
Do not message your student group. This would send the message to all students in your group and every staff member on the whole course.
